Peacock Pole Art: At The Intersection of Art & Fitness
Athletes from Peacock Pole Art & Body Weight Fitness are doing their part to raise awareness for mental health and invite community members to join the cause.
The local pole dance studio, 425 N. Santa Fe Ave., will host its annual mental health awareness fundraiser on September 30th and October 1st at 6:30 p.m. Half of the proceeds earned will go to Friendly Harbor, a Southern Colorado organization dedicated to mental wellness and recovery.
This year’s theatrical pole show will have a spooky carnival theme. Tickets for Madam Minerva’s Midnight Carn-Evil are available through Eventbrite.
Jaqueline Santos is a certified pole dance instructor and athlete who has competed in regional, national, and international competitions. She took an interest in pole dancing twelve years ago after watching pole performers in Cirque du Soleil. In 2014, she opened Peacock Pole Art, the first pole studio in Southern Colorado.
“I opened Peacock because I wanted to introduce Southern Colorado to this gorgeous art,” she said. “I wanted to help others gain confidence, strength, and flexibility through pole and to encourage artistry and fitness in my community.”
Santos and fellow Peacock Pole Art instructors Nadia Robinson and Nichole Hilliard teach pole classes for all skill levels including mixed levels pole, flexibility, strength building, and choreography classes. Aerial yoga classes will be added to the studio’s repertoire in the near future.
Peacock Pole Art received 2022 Best of Pueblo nominations for Best Fitness Center and Best Weight Loss Center, but the focus at Peacock Pole Art is more about building skills and technique than weight loss, Santos said.
“It’s not all about vanity,” she said. “It is about teaching your brain and your body complex things that you don’t think you will be able to do, then doing it and being amazing at it… one of my biggest wishes is for my students to love themselves.”
Peacock Pole Art is open Monday through Friday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Individuals may register for classes by visiting https://www.vagaro.com/peacockpoleartandbodyweightfitness or by calling 719-242-5527.
