A place even the grumpiest can appreciate? Check out Grumpy's Cafe

Having a grumpy morning? Grumpy’s Cafe has the perfect selection of sweet pastries, drinks and savory breakfast items to start your day.

Cinnamon rolls big enough for two, home-baked tarts and delicious breakfast casserole are among the fan favorites at Grumpy’s—a locally-owned coffee shop and bakery at 811 W. 4th St., in downtown Pueblo. A.J. Grinstead and his wife Sydney opened the cafe in September 2024.

“We want to provide a quaint and cozy place for everyone: from those that want black coffee and hours of conversations about the weather, to those who are on a zoom meeting while ordering their breakfast,” Sydney said.

The name Grumpy’s Cafe was suggested by a business partner who didn’t want to see “grumpy old men like her grandfather” drinking their coffee at large corporate chains instead of a local shop where they felt welcome. Of course, that’s not to say that grumpy old men are the only customers that can find something to enjoy at Grumpy’s.

Both Sydney and A.J. learned what customers of all ages want from their families. Sydney, part of the Mauro family, grew up baking at Mauro Farms and Bakery at 936 36th Lane. A.J.’s family operated Casper’s Donuts—a coffee, donuts and conversation spot that was frequented by St. Charles Mesa residents for decades.

The menu at Grumpy’s balances eats that harken back to family recipes with new and innovative flavors. Rolls like the “Classic Cinnamon” roll and the “Maple Pecan Sticky Bun” are accompanied by rotating flavors like Apple Streusel, Nutella Strawberry, Orange Cardamom, Potica, Pueblo Chile Raspberry, Strawberry Chai and more.

Drinks include drip coffee, hot teas, lattes, americanos, vanilla steamers, London Fog and summer refreshers. Grumpy’s also recently added affogatos—traditional Italian desserts with ice cream and espresso—to the menu.

In the freezers at Grumpy’s, customers may find TV dinners, various goods from Mauro Farms and Bakery or even ice cream from locally-owned Craft Cones.

Grumpy’s Cafe is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Some items rotate daily and the best way for customers to find out which items are available on a given day is to call the cafe at 719-501-3311.

Additional information is available on the cafe’s Facebook page or Instagram.

“We cannot thank our customers, regulars and first timers, enough for giving us the chance to give something unique to our community,” Sydney added. “The Lord has blessed us with all that we have and know. We can’t praise Jesus enough for this opportunity to serve you guys with something great.”
